A type of natural resin. Some are fossilized or semi-fossilized, and some are secreted from living trees, and there are various ways to extract them. Raw copal is highly soluble and is dissolved in alcohol, benzol, or turpentine to use as varnish or adhesive. In general, copal is hard, durable, abrasion-resistant, and chemical-resistant, so varnishes containing copal are highly valued as luxury items. Fossil resin, or copal close to semi-fossil resin, is dissolved by heating before use. Many are called Congo copal, Manila copal, etc., after the name of the land where they are produced.
