Kojiruien - Kojiruien

Japanese: 古事類苑 - こじるいえん
Kojiruien - Kojiruien

Encyclopedia. 351 volumes in Japanese style and 51 in Western style. Published between 1896 and 1914 (Meiji 29 - Taisho 3). Shigeki Nishimura, a senior secretary at the Ministry of Education, suggested compiling a similar text in 1879, and Kiyonori Konakamura and others began the work. In 1890, the work was entrusted to the Koten Kokyusho, and in 1895, the Jingu Shicho took over. It took 35 years to complete the 1,000 volumes. It is the only encyclopedia compiled by the government in Japan. It contains a wide range of topics on culture, society, and other subjects from ancient times to 1867 (Keio 3), with brief explanations for each topic, extensive quotations from related sources, and the names of the sources. It is divided into 30 sections, including heaven, seasons, earth, gods, and emperors, and each section is organized by related topic. It has been of great benefit to the study of Japanese culture before the Edo period.
