Born: 1909. Bengal
[Died] January 13, 1962, New Delhi. Indian politician. Graduated from Allahabad University. Became a member of the Communist Party of India Central Committee in 1933, and a member of its Politburo in 1936. After India's independence, amid intensifying conflict between the left and right factions within the Communist Party over the character of the Nehru government, he maintained a moderate position. After being elected General Secretary in 1951, he unified the party and expanded its influence. In 1957, he established India's first Communist state government in Kerala. After his death, the Communist Party split into two factions.
