Ore pillar

Ore pillar
The part of the ore body (coal seam) that is left unmined when the ore body is mined. It is also called a pillar or a crown, and in the case of a coal seam, it is called a coal pillar. In order to mine an underground ore body, in addition to the face, an organized network of tunnels that are interconnected is required. The framework of this tunnel network is called the mine structure, and it is installed to maintain it. In particular, in the pillar mining method, tunnels are cut vertically and horizontally into the coal seam to leave coal pillars (pillar making), which are then mined (pillar pulling). Pillars are also installed as safety pillars. They can be installed vertically (vertical pillars) or horizontally (horizontal pillars). They are recovered at the final stage of mining (secondary mining), but may not be recovered due to economic or safety reasons.
