A breed of dog. Also known as the Tosa fighting dog. It is not a traditional Japanese dog, but was created in Tosa (Kochi Prefecture) from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period by crossbreeding Shikoku dogs with Western dogs such as mastiffs and bulldogs in order to create a powerful fighting dog. Males are at least 67 cm tall, and females at least 61 cm tall. Males weigh at least 45 kg, and females at least 34 kg. The head is rather large, with ears that hang down from the top of the head, a thick, angular chin, and a tapered, drooping tail. The coat is short and solid reddish brown, commonly referred to as "one layer of red."
