A type of stringed instrument. Originally it referred to the Irish harp, and was widely used before the development of the modern harp. This instrument existed around the 14th century, but the tradition later died out and it was restored in Dublin in the early 19th century. It differs from earlier instruments in that it produces semitones with a manual lever and that the strings are made of gut (sheep intestine) instead of metal, but it later became popular under the name Irish harp. Today, the term generally refers to this new instrument, and it is used in Japan mainly for beginners. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
