The Twelve Stages of Genji

Japanese: 源氏十二段 - げんじじゅうにだん

A combination piece of Icchu-bushi and Kato-bushi. The correct title is "The Twelve Stages of Genji: A Joruri Offering." Lyrics by Eishi (Misasaya Nisoji). It was first performed in August 1807 (Bunka 4). The performers at the premiere included the 5th Miyako Icchu, the 7th Masumi Kato, and others. It is an adaptation of the "Fue no Dan" (Flute Dance) from "The Twelve Stages" ("Joruri Tales"), and follows the story of how Joruri Gozen and Ushiwakamaru get to know each other, make a promise, and then part ways. The story is interesting and the music has many variations, making it a valuable piece as one of the few Joruri combinations. [Takeuchi Michitaka]

一中節･河東節掛合曲。正名題は《源氏十二段　浄瑠璃供養》。恵井志（えいし）(三升屋二三治)作詞。1807年(文化4)8月開曲。初演のときの出演者は5世都一中，7世十寸見河東（ますみかとう）ほか。《十二段草子》(《浄瑠璃物語》)の〈笛の段〉を中心にその前後を脚色したもので，浄瑠璃御前と牛若丸が知り合い，契りを交わして別れるまで。話もおもしろく曲に変化があり，数少ない浄瑠璃の掛合曲として貴重である。【竹内道敬】
