…Russian composer. His father, Nikolai Nikolaevich C. (1873-1945), was also a composer known for his nationalist style and served as a professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Alexander studied music in St. Petersburg, but in 1921 he defected to Paris with his father and continued his studies there, making his debut as a pianist. He composed many works, including piano concertos, operas, and ballets, including works that used oriental scales and experimental works. He visited Japan several times around 1935, and inspired the Japanese composition world by establishing the Tcherepnin Prize, which solicited submissions for orchestral works (Akira Ifukube won the prize). …
