A village in Satsuma District, Kagoshima Prefecture. It consists of the western half of Kami-Koshikijima, at the northern end of the Koshikijima Islands, and Naka-Koshikijima (Tirara Island) to the south. Population: 2,234 (1995). Most of the area is mountainous, with an elevation of around 200-300m, with Tomekiyama (423m) being the highest peak. It has a complex ria coastline, with settlements formed on the small amount of flat land. Namakoike and Kaiike in the north are lagoons formed by the development of a beach ridge that dammed up a former small bay, and the approximately 3km long beach ridge is called Nagame-no-hama. 鹿児島県薩摩郡の村。甑島列島北端の上甑島西半と,その南に位置する中甑島(平良(たいら)島)からなる。人口2234(1995)。遠目木山(423m)を最高峰とする標高200~300m内外の山地が大部分を占める。複雑なリアス海岸線をなし,わずかな平地に集落が形成されている。北部の海鼠(なまこ)池や貝池は,かつての小湾入が浜堤の発達によりせき止められた潟湖で,約3kmの浜堤は長目ノ浜と呼ばれる。周辺は甑島県立自然公園を代表する景勝地。
