Franz Lehár

Franz Lehár

Austrian composer. Born April 30, 1870 in Komárom (now Komarno, Slovakia), which was then part of Hungary. After receiving his musical training from his father, a military bandmaster, he studied violin and theory at the Prague Conservatory, but was encouraged by Dvorak to pursue composition. His experiences as a military bandmaster in Trieste, Budapest, Vienna, and other cities, as well as his travels, are said to have contributed to the variety of his operettas. After the success of Die Viennese Women in 1902, he settled in Vienna. With the great success of The Merry Widow in 1905, he gained worldwide fame, and thereafter secured his position as the most successful Viennese operetta composer after Johann Strauss. He died in Bad Ischer on October 24, 1948. Other notable works include Gypsy Love (1910), Paganini (1925), The Tsarevich (1927), The Land of Smiles (1929), and the waltz Gold and Silver.
