A general term for birds of the family Frigatebird. There are five species. They are large, black seabirds with a conspicuous red throat pouch. Wingspan is 52 cm. They breed in Australia, New Caledonia, and islands in the South Pacific. In Japan, the great frigatebird and the little frigatebird occasionally appear as stray birds. They have a habit of attacking boobies and petrels, forcing them to spit out the fish they have eaten, which they then catch in the air and eat.
