A city in the northern part of central Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. It straddles the valley of the Yanase River and the Musashino Plateau. Until the early Showa period, it was a suburban farming village producing wheat and vegetables, but after 1931, many tuberculosis sanatoriums, including the Tokyo Prefectural Kiyose Hospital, moved in, and it became a unique hospital district. The Seibu Ikebukuro Line runs through the area, and since the 1950s, metropolitan housing complexes have been built, and the area has become rapidly residential. 10.23 km2 .
