It is a mammalian animal of the order Artiodactyla and family Cervidae. It is a small deer that lives in reed thickets and shrubs in the Yangtze River basin in China and the Korean Peninsula. It stands 45-55 cm tall and weighs 9-11 kg. It is a member of the deer family, but does not have antlers. The canines on its upper jaw are tusk-like, and males in particular have sword-like curved canines that protrude from their mouths. It has a short tail and yellowish brown fur. Its hooves are relatively wide. It usually lives alone or in pairs. It is prolific among deer species, giving birth to 1-3 pups in May and June, and sometimes seven pups. The fur of the calves is dark brown and has small white spots on its back. Its mating season is from late autumn to early winter, during which males fight by brandishing their tusks. It feeds on reeds and other plants, and can live for about 10 years in captivity.
