A structure built by the Mongolians on mountains and mountain passes using piles of earth and stones. Obo. Also written as obo or obogha, and translated into Chinese as Ebo. A wooden branch is inserted into the top of a cone-shaped platform made of stone and earth, and a trident or spear is placed in the center. Sometimes multiple obo are lined up. The Mongolians believe that the gods of heaven and earth descend to reside in this (there is also a view that the obo itself is the god of earth), and every summer they hold an obo festival, making offerings of livestock such as horses and cattle, or their meat, dairy products, and other items, praying for fertility, good health, and other blessings for the five animals, circling the obo, and making offerings of horse racing, sumo wrestling, and archery.
