Glarus - Glarus (English spelling)
The seventh canton (state) in the Swiss Confederation. It has an area of 685 km2 and a population of 39,000 (1996). Its capital is the same name (population 5,700, 1992). It joined the Swiss Confederation in 1352, but remained under the effective control of the House of Habsburg. It gained independence from the Habsburgs after winning the Battle of Näfels in 1388. The Landsgemeinde (direct democratic residents' assembly) held the previous year has been maintained to this day and is held every year on the first Sunday in May. It is located away from major transportation routes and has a tendency to decline economically.
