〘Noun〙 (abbreviation of underground) 1. Art such as experimental and avant-garde films and plays that are not commercially viable. Also, the theater companies and theaters that produce them. 2. Illegal or unofficial. "Underground Newspaper" [Essay] The word "underground" became popular from the "underground films" that began to appear around 1967. It is said to have become popular from the experimental film events at the Sogetsu Kaikan in Tokyo in 1967 , and since then it has come to refer to anti-establishment, anti-commercial, avant-garde art, culture, and customs.

〘名〙 (アンダーグラウンドの略)① 商業性を考えない実験的・前衛的な映画・演劇などの芸術。また、その劇団・劇場。② 非合法、または非公式であること。「アングラ新聞」[語誌]一九六七年頃から登場しはじめた「アンダーグラウンド映画」から「アングラ」が一般的になった。昭和四二年(一九六七)、東京の草月会館の実験映画会から流行したともいわれ、以来、反体制、反商業主義の前衛的な芸術・文化・風俗を指すようになった。
