〘名〙 (アンダーグラウンドの略)① 商業性を考えない実験的・前衛的な映画・演劇などの芸術。また、その劇団・劇場。② 非合法、または非公式であること。「アングラ新聞」[語誌]一九六七年頃から登場しはじめた「アンダーグラウンド映画」から「アングラ」が一般的になった。昭和四二年(一九六七)、東京の草月会館の実験映画会から流行したともいわれ、以来、反体制、反商業主義の前衛的な芸術・文化・風俗を指すようになった。
