German silver

Japanese: 洋銀 - ようぎん（英語表記）German silver

An alloy of copper (Cu) with nickel (Ni) 10-20% and zinc (Zn) 15-25%. Also called nickel silver. JIS C7351, C7451, etc. are examples. Cu-Ni alloys are full solid solutions, and when zinc is added to them at 30% or less, they are also solid solution alloys. Since it has a color similar to silver and good corrosion resistance, it has been used as a substitute for silver in ornaments, tableware, etc. since ancient times, and is also used in medical equipment and measuring instruments. The tensile strength of normal products is about 480-490 MPa, which is not particularly strong, but those with Ni 18-20% and Zn 20-28% can be increased to 686 MPa, and cold-worked materials can be increased to 784 MPa or more. Since it has particularly good spring properties, it is widely used for relay contacts, switches, jacks, and other electrical equipment, and for measuring instrument springs. For casting, 20% Ni, 5-10% Zn, 3% tin, and 5% lead are added, and used for valves, cocks, optical instrument parts, etc. (→ Copper-nickel alloy)

銅 Cuにニッケル Ni10～20%，亜鉛 Zn15～25%を加えた合金で，洋白ともいう。 JISの C7351，C7451などがこれに相当する。 Cu-Ni合金は全率固溶体で，これに亜鉛を 30%以下の程度加える範囲ではやはり固溶体合金である。色沢が銀に似て耐食性もよいので，古くから装飾品，食器などに銀の代用品として用いられ，また医療器械，計測器にも使われる。普通品の引張り強さは 480～490MPa程度で特に強くはないが，Ni18～20%，Zn20～28%のものは 686MPaに増強，冷間加工材はさらに 784MPa以上となり，特にばね性がよくなるので，リレー接点，スイッチ，ジャックなどの電気機器用，計測器用ばねとして重用される。鋳物用には Ni20%，Zn5～10%のほかスズ3%，鉛5%を加えたものが，バルブ，コック，光学器械部品などに用いられる。 (→銅ニッケル合金 )
