Kabuki Kyogen. Three consecutive plays. Written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. First performed at the Miyato Mandayu-za Theatre in Kyoto in January 1702 (Genroku 15). The cast includes Sakata Tojuro I as Takato Tamiya, Nakamura Shirogoro as Miyake Hikoroku, Kaneko Kichizaemon as the servant Chobei, Kirinami Chiju as the courtesan Doshiba, and Asao Jujiro as the princess. In anticipation of the Mibu-dera Jizo statue public viewing in March, the play incorporates Mibu Kyogen and the miraculous power of Jizo at Mibu Temple. In the Takato family, the young lord Tamiya falls in love with the courtesan Doshiba and leaves the house, causing a family turmoil, which causes the loyal retainer Miyake Hikoroku to worry. Tamiya appears as a fiancee and a vassal of the princess's house, performing a solitary Kyogen performance as the courtesan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
