Kabuki dance. Tokiwazu. Original title: "Kabuki no Hanakogo (Flower of the Lion Theater)." Written by Segawa Joko 3rd. Music by Kishizawa Shikisa 5th. Choreography by Hanayagi Jusuke 1st. It was first performed in April 1851 (Kaei 4) at the Nakamuraza in Edo by Ichikawa Kodanji 4th, Bando Takesaburo (Hikosaburo 5th), and others. Set in the "Soga Festival," an annual event in Edo Kabuki held to celebrate the success of the spring Soga Kyogen, the play features two tobi-gashira (head of a construction worker) dancing alongside geisha and other construction workers. The content is highly varied, including the story of the Soga brothers' night raid, a bofura dance using "Odoke-bushi," a heroic mad performance wearing a lion's head, and a Hyottoko dance. At the end of the Edo period, the background was changed to the Sanno Festival. It remains popular today as a representative example of "festival material" rich in Edo atmosphere.
