Founded in New York in 1913 by the American oil magnate J. Rockefeller, this foundation's mission is to "promote the welfare of mankind throughout the world." Along with the Carnegie and Ford foundations, it is one of the largest foundations in the United States. Initially, it focused on providing assistance to medical care, public health, medical education and research. Later, in 1929, it merged with the Rosa Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Fund and expanded its scope of activities to include the dissemination of knowledge of medicine, public health, agriculture, natural sciences, and the humanities and social sciences on a global scale. It places emphasis on providing assistance to emerging countries in Southeast Asia, Africa, and other regions, and has expanded its scholarship system for students studying in these countries.
