...Population: 162,240 (1995). In 1954, Irumagawacho and the five villages of Iruma, Horikane, Okutomi, Kashiwara, and Mizutomi were merged to form a city. Irumagawa, the center of the city, was established as a settlement where the Kamakura Highway crossed the Irumagawa River, and in the Edo period, six markets were established, numbering 2 and 7.
