A perennial herb of the Santalum family. It grows in slightly moist areas in mountain forests west of the Kanto region. The rhizome spreads horizontally, has short internodes, and produces thick, string-like roots. The stem is erect, 30-60 cm tall, tilts upward, and has 5-7 leaves growing alternately in the upper half. The leaves are ovate-elliptical, 6-15 cm long, and have slightly wavy curled edges. In April and May, pale-colored flowers hang down from the axils on slender stalks. The four tepals are arranged in a cross shape, one of which is particularly large. There are four upright stamens, and the anthers are yellow-red. The fruit is oval, pointed at the tip, and divided into two pieces. The leaves are poisonous.
