Pishpek

…It is located in a fertile basin on the left bank of the Chū River, on the northern slope of the Kyrgyz Mountains. The area has long been a settlement that served as a relay point on the steppe road, but the city's direct predecessor was the Pishpek Fort, built by Russia at the end of the 19th century, and in 1897 had a population of just 7,000. After the revolution in 1926, it was renamed Frunze in honor of General M. Frunze of the Red Guards, who was born here. It developed politically and economically as the center of the region, and became a modern city with machinery, textile, and food industries, as well as a comprehensive university. …
