Complete metamorphosis

A type of metamorphosis in insects, in which a larva passes through an inactive pupa and becomes an adult. It is seen in insects higher than Neuroptera (Trichoptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera, etc.). This process is controlled by hormones, and pupation and adulthood occur due to juvenile hormones in the corpus allata and hormones in the prothoracic gland. In holometabolism, the larval organs unique to the larvae are significantly developed, and there are large changes in structure and behavior between the larva, pupa, and adult stages. There are various degrees of holometabolism, such as protoholometabolism, true holometabolism, and, as special cases, polymetabolism, hypermetabolism, and cryptometabolism.

昆虫における変態の一型で，幼虫が不活動体の蛹を経て成虫になる現象。脈翅類より高等な昆虫類 (トビケラ類，鱗翅類，鞘翅類，膜翅類，双翅類など) でみられる。この過程はホルモンに支配され，アラタ体の幼若ホルモンと前胸腺ホルモンによって，蛹化，成虫化が起る。完全変態類では，幼虫独特の幼虫器官が著しく発達し，また幼虫，蛹，成虫の間で構造と習性の変化が激しい。完全変態には，程度により原完全変態，真完全変態，また特殊な例として多変態，過変態，隠変態などがある。
