A fern of the Melastomataceae family (illustration), characterized by its strikingly dimorphic leaves. It grows in moist areas of fields, mountains, and riverbanks. The rhizome runs long and horizontally, with leaves rather sparsely borne. The vegetative and sporophylls show striking dimorphism. The vegetative leaves are 30-60 cm long, with petioles longer than the blades and sparsely borne pale brown ovate scales on the lower part. The leaf blade is broadly ovate or triangular-elliptical, divided once into pinnate parts, with the pinnae flowing away above the mid-axis to form broad wings. The pinnae have wavy, bluntly serrated edges. The veins are reticulate. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
