...the theory that attempts to explain in a unified manner the coincidence of coastlines on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, the distribution of ancient strata and plants and animals, paleoclimate (distribution of glaciers, coal seams, coral reefs, etc.), and the origin of mountain building, by assuming that the continents of Asia, Europe (Eurasia), Africa, North and South America, India, and Australia moved horizontally across the Earth's surface without significantly changing their shape or area. It is said to have been first taken up as a full-fledged theory when the German AL Wegener published two papers in 1912 and a book titled "The Origin of the Continents and Oceans" in 1915.
