Gaeta (English spelling)
Ancient name: Gaieta. A port city and naval port in Latina Province, Lazio, central-west Italy. It is located at the end of a promontory on the northern shore of the Gulf of Gaeta, about 70 km northwest of Naples. There is an oil refinery and a glass factory, and fishing is also practiced. The area from Gaeta to Formia was a resort town for the ancient Romans, and an amphitheater remains. It flourished as a duchy from the 9th to the 12th century, then came under Norman rule, and became part of the Kingdom of Naples in the 15th century, and fell into the hands of the French in 1806. During the Italian War of Independence, it resisted the Italian army to the end, but was defeated in 1861 and was incorporated into Italian territory. Population: 22,393 (1991 estimate).
