Jakkoin Temple

Japanese:
Jakkoin Temple

This is a Tendai sect nunnery in Ohara Kusao-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City. The temple name is Seiko-san. According to temple legend, it was founded by Prince Shotoku, but it is also said to have been founded by Kukai or Ryonin. The principal image is a wooden standing statue of Jizo Bodhisattva carved with 60,000 small statues, and is a national important cultural property. After the Taira clan was destroyed in the Battle of Dannoura in 1185 (Bun'ei 1), Kenreimon'in Taira Tokuko (daughter of Kiyomori) retired to this temple to pray for the repose of the souls of Emperor Takakura, Emperor Antoku, and other members of the Taira clan. The story of Emperor Goshirakawa's visit to visit the Empress's humble abode is famous in the Kanjo chapter of the Tale of the Heike and the Noh play Ohara Goko. The papier-mâché statue of Awa no Naishi (a maid of Kenreimon'in) in the main hall is said to have been made from letters from the Taira clan. The temple later fell into ruin, but during the Keicho era (1596-1615), Katagiri Katsumoto rebuilt the temple at the request of Yodo-dono, a concubine of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In May 2000, the main hall was destroyed by fire, and the principal image was also destroyed. It is a tranquil enchanted land, and in the mountains behind it is Kenreimon'in's grave, Ohara Nishiryo.
