[Origin of the word hippopotamus]
The word kaba can be used in two ways: as a general term for trees in the Betula genus, or as a term for the bark of trees such as Chou-jizakura, Uwamizuzakura, Shirakaba, and Udai-kanba, or for these trees. The latter corresponds to the archaic word kani-ni-wa, and in the past birch and cherry trees were confused because their bark is similar, but they both were used as materials for making bentwood. Both kaba and kani-ni-wa are said to come from the Ainu word karimpa, which means umida-kanba and oyamazakura.

　カバの語は，カバノキ属の樹木を総称する場合と，チョウジザクラ，ウワミズザクラ，シラカバ，ウダイカンバなどの樹皮もしくはこれらの樹木をいう場合と2通りある。後者は古語の〈かには〉にあたるもので，古くはカバノキとサクラの仲間は，樹皮が似ているので混同されていたが，ともに曲物の材料とされた点は共通している。カバ，〈かには〉は，いずれもウダイカンバおよびオオヤマザクラのアイヌ語カリンパkarimpaによるものといわれる。…
