This is a domestically produced letterpress printing press manufactured around 1885 (Meiji 18). The manufacturer, Hirano Tomiji, along with his teacher Motoki Shozo, can be said to be the pioneers of modern letterpress printing in Japan. This is the only printing press confirmed to have been manufactured by Hirano Type Foundry in the early Meiji period.
