Machine translation is a method of translating a language that is commonly used by humans (called a natural language in contrast to artificial languages such as computer programming languages) into another natural language. Since then, research into translating Russian scientific and technical documents has been funded by the American government, and research has also been conducted in the Soviet Union, Japan, and Europe.
