As for the second method, methods of contraception such as inserting a tampon soaked in a sperm-killing drug into the female genitals, expelling semen outside the vagina by interrupting intercourse, and magical methods to show that one does not want to become pregnant were widely seen. External ejaculation had long been prohibited in Christian cultures, especially in Catholic countries, as the sin of Onan, described in Genesis 38:8-10 of the Old Testament (Onan was ordered to marry his brother's wife and have children, but refused and leaked semen on the ground, for which he was punished by God. The word masturbation, which is used today to mean masturbation, is based on this). However, the French Revolution created a tendency to ignore Onan's sin, which led to the rapid spread of intercourse interruption methods thereafter.
