One of the classic horse races. It is a race for three-year-old fillies only, held at Epsom Racecourse in Epsom, England, with a distance of 1.5 miles (about 2400m). It is said to have been planned in 1779 by the 12th Earl of Derby for his newlywed wife. The name comes from the fact that the Earl's villa had a magnificent oak tree and was called "House of the Oaks." In Japan, the Yushun Himba (Oaks), which was modeled after this race, was founded in 1938 and is held every May.
