In the 19th century, the Druze rulers, aided by Britain, engaged in fierce sectarian conflict with the French-backed Maronites, leading to French military intervention in 1860. After World War I, the Jumblatt and Arslān families competed for leadership in Lebanon, the latter of which produced many influential Arab nationalist politicians.
