The first ancient example is the one-eyed demon that ate humans, who appears in the Kojiki and Kogoshu, as well as in the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki and Konjaku Monogatarishu. The Konjaku Monogatari states that "His face was vermilion in color, wide like a circular seat, and had one eye."

…It is located in Tado, Tado-cho, Kuwana-gun, Mie Prefecture. It enshrines Amatsuhikone-no-Mikoto, and its branch shrine, Ichimokuren-jinja, enshrines Amenomahitotsu-no-Mikoto. Amenomahitotsu-no-Mikoto is said to be the son of Amatsuhikone-no-Mikoto and the ancestor of the Kuwana-no-Kubi. …
