Numata [city] - Numata
A city in northern Gunma Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It is surrounded by Mt. Hotaka and Mt. Akagi, and occupies the Numata Basin in the upper reaches of the Tone River and the Katashina River basin, a tributary of the Numata Basin. Its eastern end borders Tochigi Prefecture. Numata Castle was built in the city center in 1532 (Tenbun 1), and in the early modern period it developed as a castle town for the Sanada, Kuroda, and Toki clans, as well as a market town. The Joetsu Line and the Kan'etsu Expressway run through the city. Forest product trading and industry include lumber and furniture manufacturing, which account for more than 60% of the city's manufactured goods shipments (2003). The surrounding area is rich in rice, wheat, soybeans, tobacco, and konjac. It is a base for tourism in Oze and Oku-Nikko, and there is Numata Park, with the ruins of Numata Castle, near Numata Station, Mt. Kasho in the north, and Oigami Onsen and Fukiware Falls in the east. In February 2005, the villages of Shirasawa and Tone in Tone County were incorporated. 443.46 km2 . 51,265 people (2010). → Numata Domain
