A city in the northeastern part of Fukui Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the northern part of the Ono Basin and the surrounding mountainous areas, and the Echizen Railway runs along the Kuzuryu River. The city center developed as a castle town for the Ogasawara clan from the Genroku period onwards, and was known for its production of shredded tobacco. Today, it is part of the Fukui textile industry, which flourished from the Meiji period onwards, and has many silk and rayon weaving factories. There is the site of Heisen-ji Temple (historic site), which flourished in the Middle Ages, and the Rokuroshi Ski Resort. The Katsuyama Sagicho Festival, held in February, has a tradition of over 300 years and attracts many tourists. 253.88 km2 . Population 25,466 (2010).

福井県北東部の市。1954年市制。大野盆地北部と周辺山地を占め,九頭竜(くずりゅう)川沿いにえちぜん鉄道が通じる。中心市街は元禄年間以降小笠原氏の城下町として発達,刻みタバコの産で知られた。現在は明治以降盛んになった福井機業地帯に属し絹・人絹織物工場が多い。中世に栄えた平泉寺の跡(史跡),六呂師スキー場があり,2月に行われる勝山左義長まつりは300年以上の伝統をもつもので,観光客が多い。253.88km2。2万5466人(2010)。
