The trading situation in the commodity market is called the commodity market, and the components of the commodity market include price fluctuations, cargo movements, settlement terms, and delivery terms. A commodity is a general term for a commodity whose components change sensitively according to the supply and demand relationship of that commodity. If the components of the market are narrowed down, they are reduced to price fluctuations, so the biggest characteristic of a commodity is that its price fluctuates greatly. There are domestically-driven commodity markets, such as steel, raw yarn (cotton yarn, wool yarn, staple yarn, etc.), and plywood, which have a domestic supply and demand base, and overseas-driven commodity markets, such as non-ferrous metals such as copper, lead, zinc, and tin, agricultural products such as sugar, soybeans, and corn, and precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum, which are highly dependent on imports.

商品市場での取引状況を商品市況というが，商品市況の構成要素には，値動き，荷動き，決済条件，受渡し条件などがある。市況商品とは，これら各要素がその商品の需給関係に応じて敏感に変化する商品の総称である。市況の構成要素は絞っていけば値動きに帰着するから，市況商品の最大の特徴は価格の変動が大きい点にある。市況商品には，国内に需給の基盤を置く鋼材，原糸(綿糸，毛糸，スフ糸など)，合板など国内主導の市況商品と，輸入依存度が高い銅，鉛，亜鉛，スズなどの非鉄金属，砂糖，大豆，トウモロコシなどの農産物，および金，銀，白金など貴金属を代表とする海外主導の市況商品とがある。
