…In November 1804 (Bunka 1), he took the stage name Hanshiro at the Edo Nakamuraza. In November 1822 (Bunsei 5), Hanshiro performed as a leading female actor at the Edo Ichimuraza, his eldest son Kumesaburo II performed at the Nakamuraza, and his second son Iwai Shiwaku performed at the Edo Moritaza, marking the height of the Iwai family's prosperity. He was praised for his charm and for being a "great woman" and "great day man," and played a wide range of roles from the "bad woman" in the Nanboku mono drama to Shirai Gonpachi and Aragoto. …
