Studied at Pennsylvania Woman's College and the Johns Hopkins University Graduate School of Zoology, receiving her master's degree in 1932. After briefly teaching at the University of Maryland, she joined the government's Fisheries and Wildlife Service as a marine biologist, and later worked at the Marine Biological Laboratories in Woods Hole and Beaufort.
