In 1898, the British established the Nkore (Nkole) Kingdom in southwestern Uganda under their protectorate, and by 1914 had created the new Ankole Kingdom by adding the neighboring small kingdoms of Buhweju, Bujimba, and Igala. The Nkole Kingdom originated from the Batchewezi dynasty of the Kitara Kingdom, which once ruled a vast area from western Uganda to western Tanzania in the 14th and 15th centuries. The first king of Nkore, Ruhinda, was said to be the son of Walara, the last king of Batchewezi, and ruled the entire area of western Uganda.
