...An inro maki-e artist from the late Edo period. Dates of birth and death unknown. Commonly known as Genroku, his pen name was Kanshosai. During the Meiwa period (1764-72), he was employed by Hachisuka Shigeyoshi of Awa on a stipend of six koku for three people, and lived in his clan residence in Edo's Nakahashi Himono-cho. Although he was a tough man who refused Lord Hachisuka's order to maki-e wooden sandals, he was also a man of letters who excelled in poetry. He showed a tasteful and elegant style of work, and his representative work is the Ujigawa Firefly Maki-e Paper Inkstone Box (Imperial Household Agency).
