Mitsumasa Anno - Mitsumasa Anno

Painter and picture book author. Born in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture. Graduated from Yamaguchi Normal School. After working as an elementary school teacher, he became an illustrator in 1960. Attracted by Escher's paintings, he attracted attention with his picture book "Fushiginae" (1968), which used the optical illusion technique to feature many dwarfs. He won the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists for "ABC no Hon - The Twisted Alphabet" (1974), and the Golden Apple Award at the Bratislava International Children's Book Fair (BIB) in what was then Czechoslovakia for "Aiueo no Hon" (1976). He also drew unique picture books related to the world of numbers, such as "Hajimete de Usugaku no Hon" (1972) and "Beautiful Mathematics - Sets" (1974). He has also worked on delicately drawn, lyrical picture books such as "Art Book: Wild Flowers and Dwarfs" (1976, Shogakukan Art Award) and "Song Picture Book" (1977), and has since been active in a wide range of fields, including landscape painting, book design, and essays. He has received international acclaim, including the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration, the Brooklyn Museum of Art Award, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the Kate Greenaway Medal, and the Bologna Children's Book Fair Graphics Award. He has written many books, including the essay collection "Fantasy Workshop" (1979), six volumes of "Anno Mitsumasa's Collected Writings" (1995), a collection of 311 unusual and bizarre questions "Sango Jyugo" (1996), and "The Road to Return to Hometown" (2000). The Mitsumasa Anno Museum of Art was completed in his hometown of Tsuwano and opened in March 2002. In 1988, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon.
