...Jointing is a method of joining boards together primarily to obtain the required width. In both imotsuke (dozuke hagi) and nanametsuke, a thick stud or hollow timber or bamboo nails are inserted for reinforcement, and chigiri may also be inserted. In addition, there are other methods such as aigaki (aiji yakuri hagi, ichihagi), yatoizane hagi, hanezane hagi (honzane), and yagen hagi, in which two boards are joined together by cutting the top and bottom halves of each board into a joint and gluing them together. The end bracket is a method of fitting battens to both ends of a board to prevent the boards from coming apart or stretching, and to hide the ends of the boards. There are various types of end brackets, such as stick end brackets, retaining end brackets, and end swallow brackets.
