...He was born into a family of Fulani scholars who had migrated from the Fouta Tolo region upstream of the Senegal River in the 15th century, and studied under his father and other Islamic scholars close to him. He began working as a teacher around 1774-75. In the 1780s and 1790s, together with his brother Abd Allah, a prominent Islamic scholar and one of his students, and his son Muhammad Bello, his fame grew and he also gained the support of Hausa peasants.
