…There are many variations of the rapid-stroke, black-lettered cursive script for letters, such as the Italian calligraphy, as seen in 13th-century papal documents, and the 15th-century French eclectic style. In the 15th century, Italian humanists studied classical culture, and the clear lettera antica (antique type) based on Carolingian minuscule letters and the italic type derived from black-letter letters were created. With the invention of the printing press, the former became the prototype for the Roman type for official documents, and the latter for the italic type. Calligraphy became popular in Italy, the Netherlands, and France in the 17th century, and masterpieces such as Julie's Flowers (1641), commissioned by the Marquis de Montausier, were produced. …
