Atago Shrine (Tokyo)

...There are records that it was a famous spot for viewing the moon and snow during the Edo period, and the 1897 "Shinsen Tokyo Meisho Zue" (Illustrated Guide to Famous Places in Tokyo) describes it as having the best view in Tokyo. Atago Shrine, which was enshrined in 1603 (Keicho 8) from Kyoto, is enshrined on the top of the mountain, and on the steep slope in front of the shrine on the east side are Otokozaka and Onnazaka. The 86 stone steps of Otokozaka are famous for the story of Magaki Heikuro from the storytelling "Kan'ei Sanbajutsu," and there are plum trees hand-picked by Magaki Heikuro in front of the shrine, but there are no records of Heikuro at the shrine. ...

…江戸時代には月見や雪見の名所とされていた記録もあり，1897年の《新撰東京名所図会》では東京一の眺めと記されている。山上に1603年(慶長8)に京都の愛宕神社を勧請した愛宕神社がまつられ，東側社前の急斜面には男坂，女坂がある。86段ある男坂の石段は，講談《寛永三馬術》の曲垣（まがき）平九郎の話で名高く，社前に曲垣平九郎手折りの梅もあるが，神社には平九郎に関する記録は残っていない。…
