Hypocalcemia occurs in dairy cows at the time of parturition. After parturition, cows begin lactation, and large amounts of calcium are released into the milk. As a result, cows lose calcium from their blood after giving birth and may fall into this condition. Calcium should normally be replenished from feed and bones, but if metabolism in the body is insufficient, the cow will be unable to stand after giving birth, and will suffer from circulatory disorders and impaired consciousness. In this case, intravenous injection of a calcium agent (calcium borogluconate liquid) is effective. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
