Nuclear magnetism

The magnetic property of atomic nuclei. Many atomic nuclei have a magnetic moment (nuclear magnetic moment) that arises from the spin and angular momentum of nucleons (a collective term for protons and neutrons), and this nuclear magnetic moment gives rise to nuclear magnetism. Because the magnitude of the nuclear magnetic moment is extremely small, about one thousandth of the magnetic moment of an electron, and the interaction between nuclear magnetic moments is small, most substances exhibit paramagnetism down to extremely low temperatures of about 10 ^-5 K, and follow the classical Curie law, which states that the magnetic susceptibility is inversely proportional to absolute temperature.

原子核の示す磁性。多くの原子核は，核子(陽子と中性子の総称)のスピンと角運動量から生ずる磁気モーメント(核磁気モーメント)をもっており，この核磁気モーメントによって核磁性が生ずる。核磁気モーメントの大きさが電子の磁気モーメントの数千分の1程度と非常に小さく，また核磁気モーメント間の相互作用が小さいため，核磁性はほとんどの物質で10^－5K程度の極低温まで常磁性を示し，絶対温度に逆比例する磁化率をもつという古典的なキュリーの法則に従う。
