…Since the beginning of the 17th century, it was Jesuits who conducted research on China, and it was French Jesuits who achieved particularly remarkable results. For example, N. Trigault (1577-1628) created a Chinese pronunciation dictionary called the Xiru Er Mu Zi, which he published in Hangzhou in 1626. Although the book was written in Chinese, the characters were transcribed into the alphabet, which astonished Chinese scholars and contributed to the development of phonology in China. …
